Resuming after a one-year break, the traditional cup competition will be hosted by last year’s Latvian league winners Valmiera/ORDO and will take place at the Vidzeme Olympic Center on September 24-25.
Alongside title sponsors Triobet, the BBL Cup will also have the backing of ORDO Group for this year’s event, a company that has been a proud partner of the local basketball team in Valmiera for five years now, helping the club claim its first ever Latvian league title.
The winner of the Triobet BBL Cup 2016 will receive a €5,000 prize.
Alongside the new Latvian champs, the tournament will also feature the defending three-time Triobet BBL winners BC Siauliai, Estonian champions BC Kalev/Cramo and Latvian league runners-up Ventspils.
The hosts of this year’s event will make their debut in such a tournament, while the three other Triobet BBL Cup 2016 teams have already participated more than once.
Ventspils can be considered the most successful among the four teams, having finished third on four different occasions. Meanwhile, Kalev/Cramo and Siauliai could not climb higher than fourth despite multiple tries.
Both Semi-Finals will take place on September 24, with Siauliai playing against Ventspils in the first of two games at 15:00 before the home side Valmiera/ORDO takes on Kalev/Cramo later in the day at 17:30.
The third-place game and the final will be played on September 25, with matches starting at 16:00 and 18:30 respectively.
In the history of the competition, there has been seven different winners, but no club done it more than once. No matter what happens in Valmiera, this tradition will be upheld and a new team will add its name to the illustrious list of BBL Cup winners.
