Barons/LDz struggle past Parnu for first win

RIGA – After having lost the three initial games, Barons/LDz finally managed to come out on top, as they edged Port of Parnu 73-65 in the group A matchup on Wednesday.

The first quarter predicted a close game, as Parnu sneaked ahead by just two points after the first ten minutes. The Latvians were dominant in the second quarter, though, winning the stretch 21-12.

While a 7-point lead at halftime was clearly no indication of a win, Barons/LDz soon doubled that margin and were up ahead by 15 with less than half the third quarter remaining. When it all seemed to be slipping away, Port of Parnu got off to a run, cutting their deficit to just four with a 10-0 run.

Barons/LDz were solid in the final quarter, as they kept a safe distance of at least two-three possessions throughout the period and managed to secure the victory with no extra drama.

Arturs Ausejs was impressive for the victors, as he tallied 26 points, including seven long-range shots. Roberts Freimanis added 11 to the total and was the only other player in double-digit scoring for Barons/LDz. Malcolm Rhett had a dominant night amongst the backboards, as he recorded 16 rebounds to go along his 6 points.

Paulius Petrilevicius had another solid outing for Parnu, as he scored 21 points and added 8 rebounds. Andrew Warren added 17 points and 7 boards, while Rain Raadik was good for 14 points and another 7 rebounds.
