BBL Playoffs Review: Eighth-Finals

With the first round of the Baltic Basketball League (BBL) playoffs already in the books, let’s round up the most impressive performances and most memorable events of the eighth-finals.

PAIRED UP. Pieno Zvaigzdes are set to face TU/Rock in the quarterfinals, while Prienai Tonybet will match up with the Norrkoping Dolphins. On the other side of the brackets, Pyrinto await Nevezis, while Ventspils look to face their Group C foes in Siauliai.

NO UPSETS. Although all the higher-seeded teams made it past the eighth-finals barrier, the path wasn’t quite as easy as expected for some of them.

SCARE. While Lietkabelis and Juventus, seeded 14th and 13th, managed to win their home games against Ventspils and Prienai respectively by a single shot, Valmiera made a real statement with their 19-point victory against the 7th seeded Nevezis. However, despite winning the first game, they were blown out in Kedainiai by 26.

HIGH-VOLTAGE. Pyrinto continue to demonstrate the high-tempo offense we’ve already gotten used to. They’re averaging a league-high 100.5 points per game in the playoffs. Siauliai stands right behind the Fins with a 99 point per game average.

ATTENDANCE. Just like you could expect, fans are eager to see playoff basketball. Four teams hit quadruple-digits in attendance with TU/Rock recording 1500 viewers. Juventus, Valmiera and Nevezis also hit the one thousand mark.

Travis Leslie was plain-and-simple unstoppable in the eighth-finals. The guard was on top of his game and averaged 22 points, 10.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists and a monstrous 33 ranking points, all while shooting at a nearly 60 percent clip from the field, in the two games.

Although Tarvas’ Rait Keerles played in only one game, he was just as important for his team. The forward scored 21 points, added 12 rebounds, leading to 30 ranking points against Pyrinto.

Joakim Kjellbom finishes third this time, with his 16 points and 8 rebounds average. The big man averaged 25.5 ranking points per game for the Dolphins.

Evaldas Kairys of Pieno Zvaigzdes makes his Top 5 debut with two solid outings. The forward averaged 22.5 points, 8 rebounds and hit 75 percent of his field goals. Kairys collected 25 ranking points on average.

Finishing up the list is another member of Pieno Zvaigzdes – Rolandas Alijevas. The point guard had a double-double in his single outing against Liepaja, scoring 10 points and dishing out 10 assists.
