Ventspils hammer Siauliai by 59 for a spot in Final

VALMIERA – The first Semi-Final of the Triobet BBL Cup 2016 saw Ventspils put on a majestically dominant display to book a ticket to the Final of the competition with a 103-44 thumping of Siauliai in the first of the two Semi-Finals at the Vidzeme Olympic Center on Saturday.

Right from the get-go, the new-look three-time Triobet BBL champions from Lithuania had no answers for the Latvian club, as Ventspils ran away to a double-digit lead already in the opening quarter, going up 21-10.

The game continued in the same direction in the second quarter and the gap grew to 46-21 at the halftime break, with the possibilities of a Siauliai comeback shrinking with every successful Ventspils basket.

Having started the third quarter with a 10-0 run, last year’s Latvian league bronze medalists increased their lead to 35 points behind great team play. Unfortunately for Siauliai, the gap between the sides did not stop growing and Ventspils found themselves up 74-32 at the end of the third quarter.

The Lithuanian side didn’t cover themselves with glory in the fourth quarter as well, with the deficit increasing by an additional 17 points in the final frame.

Everyone on the active roster of Ventspils scored in the game, with the trio of Willie Deane, Toms Leimanis and Aigars Skele leading the winners with 13 points each. Rihards Kuksiks added 12 points and six assists, while Ronalds Zakis chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds.

For Siauliai, captain Darius Gvezdauskas was the only player in double figures with 12 points in his account, while youngster Martynas Echodas was next in line with six points.
